How to play DREIDEL BINGO
Spin the four-color dreidel twice to find a color and a letter. Mark the matching symbol on your game sheet. The first player to get four in a row calls out “Latke!”
To begin
Players may receive 8 DREIDEL BINGO cards at the beginning of the game or a new card at the beginning of every round.
Single turn
A different person spins the dreidel to find the letter and color combination every turn.
In single DREIDEL BINGO, the spinner spins the four-color dreidel twice. First they announce the color (blue, red, green, yellow), then the letter (gimmel, nūn, shin, hey).
Marking the spin
Everyone finds the corresponding circle on their card and marks it with a marker or pen. A designated person records every spin on the official spin sheet.
Winning
The first person to get four in a row, in any direction, calls out “Latke!” and, after checking the spin sheet, receives 1 coin (not included).
The first person to get two rows, in any direction, calls out “Latkes!” and, after checking the spin sheet, receives 2 coins (not included).
The first person to get three rows, in any direction, calls out “Latkes with Applesauce!” and, after checking the spin sheet, receives 3 coins (not included). The round then ends.
You can also call out “Latkes with Sour Cream” or “Latkes with Guacamole,” depending on your family tradition. “Latke, Latke, Applesauce!” is acceptable too.
End of the game
A game of DREIDEL BINGO traditionally lasts 8 rounds. Winners can exchange their gelt for prizes.
Some people also use their winnings to play a round of dreidel, depending on family tradition.
About
DREIDEL BINGO was created by Ezra Butler in 2024 in Chicago. Ezra is an independent researcher of the history and language of color and writes the Colorphilia newsletter. He is also researching the Jewish origins of Robin Hood.
History of Dreidel Bingo
2024
DREIDEL BINGO was invented in Chicago, somewhat by accident. At a party-planning meeting, Ezra suggested the game without yet knowing exactly how it would work. More than 250 people played it at Emanuel Congregation’s annual Hanukkah party, and it was a huge success.
2025
Home and party versions were printed and shipped to dozens of people and organizations in the US and UK. Each card was a one-round version. A last-minute idea made it possible to send a version quickly to LabShul for its Hanukkah party.
2026
As shipping prices increased, we adapted the LabShul version so people could download it themselves. Every sheet is customizable, including color-blind accessible versions, so everyone can play DREIDEL BINGO.
Frequently asked questions
Is DREIDEL BINGO more fun than traditional dreidel?
At least twice as much fun: everyone spins twice, and everyone can win on any spin. In traditional dreidel, only the spinner can win or lose on their turn.
Can I make some of my DREIDEL BINGO sheets color-blind accessible?
Yes! When downloading your sheets, you can choose color-blind accessible versions for any number of sheets in your order.
Where can I get a four-color dreidel?
You can buy one wherever dreidels are sold. If your local retailer does not carry one, you can order one from DREIDEL BINGO, use two dreidels with colored stickers, or agree on a color for each letter and use a regular dreidel.
